Someone I Love is Sick, Children's Book
childrens book cover reduced
What is the need for this book?
Very young children, ages 2-6, have unique learning capabilities and unique needs. They are sensitive to changes in their families, but their capacity for understanding and coping with these changes is limited by their attention span, language level, understanding of time sequencing and retention abilities. Many young children learn well from being told or read stories, but the story must respect the specific developmental abilities of this age group. At the current time there are no materials developed for this age group to help them understand and cope with the reality of a parent with cancer.

How does Someone I Love is Sick address the need?
Someone I Love is Sick is a book that can be adapted to address the differences in every family situation when dealing with cancer, including diagnosis, successful treatment, recurrence, hospitalization and end of life. Parents make the choice about which pages to utilize. The book is written at a pre-school level, with instructions to parents for how to select the appropriate pages for their young children. Someone I Love is Sick will be available in one version for parents and another for grandparents and each version will be offered in English and Spanish.

The book will be available in early 2009 from The Gathering Place. For more information please contact the author, Kathleen McCue.
