Lemonade Recipes

You may have seen a little yellow booklet called "Lemonade Recipes" on display at The Gathering Place and TGP Collection, but you may not have known it was written by one of our wonderful volunteer/participants, Carol Conti-Entin. Carol wrote this inspirational collection of anecdotal mini-chapters to be a portable light read for those newly diagnosed with any type of chronic illness and a quick boost of confidence when having a serious medical condition seems overwhelming. As a long-term survivor of two chronic non-cancerous conditions and numerous procedures, Carol had grown to understand that a serious illness can actually "enhance your life." In the manner of Chicken Soup for the Soul, her stories are bite-sized lessons in coping, personal awareness and reaching out.

Carol first came to us in 2000 as the caregiver of her father-inlaw, Mo Entin. Mo, a retired physician, had three kinds of cancer and became very involved in our support groups and other services in the last year of his life. Carol accompanied and encouraged him, thus experiencing for herself the benefits of our programs. After Mo’s death, Carol went through our volunteer training and started to assist Eileen Coan in the library. Little did she know when she wrote this booklet that it would soon touch her life directly. Carol herself was diagnosed with endometrial cancer in 2003. She learned firsthand that a cancer diagnosis "packs quite a punch." She quickly applied what she had written, glad to find that she "wouldn’t change anything, it was helpful."

Carol is back volunteering in the library and on our outreach committee, representing us at health fairs. She hopes that Lemonade Recipes triggers many sequels – in its readers! She generously gave us the ‘rights’ to the booklet, to make it available to those who need it, and as a fundraiser for the very reasonable suggested donation of $5, (reduced for larger orders).
